American Online Personality Penalized Following Large-Scale E-Bike Ride on Sydney Harbour Bridge

New South Wales police have issued a fine against an American social media personality and served two traffic infringement notices for alleged reckless operation following a large group of e-bike riders converged on the famous Sydney landmark during peak-hour traffic on a weekday.

The Event: A Prohibited Ride

A gathering of approximately 40 people riding e-bikes and motorcycles proceeded along the primary roadway of the bridge, an area where bicycle riding is banned. The riders subsequently reversed direction and rode through the city’s CBD and a nearby district.

"This had a risk of people to be injured and killed," stated NSW police assistant commissioner David Driver on Wednesday.

Police indicated they did not immediately pursue the group out of safety concerns but instead located the assembly at a scenic Sydney lookout near the city gardens, where they dispersed.

Penalties Issued for Influencer

Later in the week, police announced they had served the US social media influencer who goes by the influencer, twenty-six, with two traffic infringement notices for negligent driving (not involving death or prior injury), carrying a penalty of over five hundred dollars and penalty points per notice, in relation to the bridge ride-out. Officials noted that the investigation is ongoing.

The influencer is said to have over 3.4 million followers on one platform and more than 1.2m on the social media app.

Creator's Response

The content creator gave comments to a local publication recently after the incident gained traction on news sites and social media, stating he was sorry for giving "the biking community" a negative image.

"I’ll probably take responsibility. It was one of the safest gatherings I have witnessed," he told the publication. "I am a visitor here, so I’m going to abide by the laws and norms of Sydney. When I decided to do a public meeting it was not meant to include a group ride, it was just to say hi near the bridge."

"I did not know the area well, it was my fault we found ourselves on the bridge and I had a decision to make: whether the group completes the entirety of the bridge and turns around, which is a crime. Or we reverse, essentially, before entering the bridge. I chose at the time to go back."

Broader Context on Electric Bike Rules

The spate of e-bikes on streets across the country has prompted increasing demands for regulation. The federal health minister, Mark Butler, commented that non-compliant electric bikes were a "total menace on the road."

"Young people have engaged in reckless acts on bikes ever since the early bicycle [but] the injuries that are presenting at our hospital emergency departments are truly severe," he stated. "We must ensure we stop these things coming into the country [and] police are given the authority to crack down, to take them away, to crush them, to dispose of them."

NSW reported over two hundred injuries associated with electric bikes in 2024. However, in the initial half of the following year, that figure jumped to 233 injuries plus four fatalities.
